CAMPUS JOBS, REUs, CO-OPs, INTERNSHIPS and JOBS

CAMPUS JOBS Opportunities for Appalachain State University Physics and Astronopmy Majors to work during the period they are students on campus can be funded by WORK STUDY or UNIVERSITY funds. See the Major's Handbook.
Opportunities for off campus research/job experiences can be as an Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), coop,or as an internship student. REUs Several Physics and Astronomy students have participated in REU programs at National Laboratories, such as NIST, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, National Radio Astronomical Observatory, and NRL. Others have attended programs at Lowell Observatory, Florida Institute of Technology, CREEL at University of Central Florida. See Dr. Sherman about these details. You can check out her web site for REU Summer Internship Opportunties. Details of some of these experiences will be given at the Symposium of Summer Student Research on Wednesday 5 November at 5:00 PM in CAP 150. CO-OPs Co-ops are cooperative education/work experiences with companies/laboratories which usually hire scientists and engineers. The student is eligible if they have been in physics and math courses for two years. (That is, students should have completed Intermediate Physics, Differential Equations and have a GPA about 3.0 on a 4.0 system. The student usually works for one semester and then returns to college the next. Some firms allow this to be done during the summer months. During the first work period the student signs up for the COOP course, CEP 1000. In cases where courses are not taught each semester, cooping will dramatically increase the time for the student to complete their degree program, unless it is done during the summer. Students who find companies to coop with should talk with their advisor before entering a coop program. Usually students are limited to about 2.5 to 3.0 years of work with the company before finishing their bachelor's degree. INTERNSHIPS Internships are normally found by the student. Once obtained see Dr. Calamai about the details for signing up for the internship course. JOBS From time to time internship opportunties or jobs are received and will be placed on this homepage.
